I love trying different art techniques.
I’ve been playing with patterns.
I recently found out this style has a name called Zentangle or Zentangle-inspired.
Basically, it’s a form of art in which patterns are repeated methodically and precise. But the finished piece is abstract.
My version is based on the Zentangle philosophy with one exception the finished art is something.
My first attempt was an owl drawing.
I did a light pencil sketch of the main shapes of the owl.
I then used a Pigma Micron pen to trace over the pencil lines. In a Zentangle drawing, no pencils are used only a pen.
I also sometimes lay a piece of scrap paper underneath my drawing hand so I keep the rest of the drawing clean.
The pens I used have fast drying ink, which lessens the chance of smears.
Artist tip: If you’re right-handed I recommend working from left to right. This will help avoid smears as well.
Adding more patterns using a pen. The patterns I am drawing are not traced over pencil lines, instead I simply draw the patterns in as I envision them to fit the space.
The pens I use have varying tip sizes. I like to use the Micron 08 for the heavy outlines or main body of my drawing. And I use Micron 005 to achieve thin lines and details. The Pigma Micron pen set I have include tip sizes: 005, 01, 02, 05 and 08. I use them all.
Adding more patterns. Again, shapes are simply drawn as I think of them. I turn the paper as needed to help curve some of my lines.
And yes I make mistakes too. But when I make a mistake I turn the mistake into just another pattern.
Here is the finish drawing that is an Artist trading card. I will be swapping this piece of art for another Artist trading card from someone else.
I decided not to add color because I feel the art is strong enough in black and white.
Here’s a sneak peek at another Zentangle-inspired art piece I am currently working on.
